Elementary (Grades 1-6)

At Evansville Christian School, our students feel safe, known, and valued while seeing Christian values modeled in the classroom. Academically our elementary grades are designed to build a foundation in all subject areas, while encouraging students to discover their interests and passions. Our curriculum is aligned with, and exceeds, the Indiana College and Career-Ready Standards with an integrated Biblical worldview.  We have four homerooms at each grade level with a maximum of 22 students per homeroom.

Licensed elementary teachers and staff work together to create a positive learning environment that will challenge students to do their personal best while equipping students to become life-long learners.  We place an emphasis on critical thinking skills; integration of technology; and the development of social skills, study skills, creativity, self-expression, and individual learning styles.

Lower Elementary (Grades 1-3)

Lower elementary students experience growth in literacy and develop their ability to read, write, spell, speak, and listen well. We provide our students with a strong phonetic approach to reading in the early years of development and then guide them to think critically and biblically as they expand their literacy skills in upper elementary levels. On average, ECS students perform 1-2 grade levels above their actual grade equivalency in reading, according to STAR assessments. Additionally, ECS students have a history of 100% pass rates on IREAD, which is a required assessment for all third graders in Indiana.

Students are also taught a comprehensive approach to develop writing skills. In math, students learn computation skills along with more complex problem solving and mathematical practices.  Science is inquiry-based, focusing on scientific investigation and critical thinking.  Social Studies focuses on geography skills, history, and understanding community. Students regularly utilize technology labs, numerous devices, platforms, and apps in the classroom, and an extensive Media Center. Cyber safety is addressed in each grade in alignment with the technology tools introduced at each grade level. Students utilize the SeeSaw online system through the 3rd grade.

To provide a well-rounded education, students participate in “specials” classes in areas of art, music, physical education, library, and technology, which are all taught by licensed teachers who specialize in these subjects. Students also have opportunities to participate in a wide-range athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities as they discover their God-given gifts and talents.

Upper Elementary (Grades 4-6)

Upper elementary grades are designed to build on the foundation laid in the lower elementary years and to prepare students for middle school.  The program at ECS follows a departmentalized structure, and students rotate classes to each teacher licensed for their specific subject of math, science, social studies, language arts, and Bible. Students also participate in specials classes of art, music appreciation or band, physical education, technology, and library. ECS students score above the national and state averages in Reading, Language, Math, and Science on assessments and perform 1-2 grade levels above their actual grade equivalency in reading, according to STAR assessments.

Key features include a Christ-centered curriculum that is relevant and aligned with Indiana College and Career-Ready Standards; a safe, nurturing environment that helps students develop positive peer relationships; and an extensive media and technology emphasis that prepares them with the essential skills necessary to prepare for today’s global landscape.  Upper elementary students build valuable critical-thinking and real-world problem solving skills. Students regularly utilize technology labs, numerous devices, platforms, and apps in the classroom, and an extensive Media Center. Cyber safety is addressed in each grade in alignment with the technology tools introduced at each grade level. Students utilize Google Classroom in core subjects.

In addition, students work on projects, individually and in teams, which integrate various subjects across the curriculum.  We also focus on character development and guide students as they sharpen the organizational, study, and presentation skills needed to be successful.

Students have opportunities to enhance their leadership qualities and strengthen their level of responsibility to the glory of God.  We partner with parents to guide and encourage students to be responsible for their learning and progress.

4th-6th grade students can participate in a wide-range athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities as they develop their God-given gifts and talents.
